Havalite Licensing

Havalite is distributed under a license, which means there are certain things that you are legally permitted (or not permitted) to do with Havalite software and source code. Havalite is distributed under a popular license called the GNU General Public License. If that doesn't ring a bell, read on.

The license under which the Havalite software is released is the GPLv2 (or later) from the Free Software Foundation. A copy of the license is included with every copy of Havalite, but you can also read the text of the license here.

Part of this license outlines requirements for derivative works, such as plugins or themes. Derivatives of Havalite code inherit the GPL license. Drupal, which has the same GPL license as Havalite, has an excellent page on licensing as it applies to themes and modules.

There is some legal grey area regarding what is considered a derivative work, but we feel strongly that plugins and themes are derivative work and thus inherit the GPL license.

About the GPL

The GNU General Public License, or GPL, is an open source license. Open source doesn't just mean that you can view the source code — it has political and philosophical implications as well. Open source, or "Free Software", means you are free to modify and redistribute the source code under certain conditions. Free doesn't refer to the price, it refers to freedom. The difference between the two meanings of free is often characterized as "Free as in speech vs. free as in beer." The GPL is free as in speech.
